Repair Mistakes & Blunders

Ouch!

I replaced a camshaft seal on my 14-year-old Mitsubishi Diamante. When done with hand tools, it was a full-day job because it required removing the drive and timing belts to get to the seal. Other than a stuck camshaft sprocket nut that required me to pull so hard on the breaker bar I thought my shoulder was going to dislocate, all went fine.

I put it all back together and the engine ran fine in the garage, so I got ready for my evening plans. As I drove off from the house, the engine was vibrating so excessively I could feel it in the body of the car. Fearing that something bad had happened, I immediately returned home and cancelled my plans. Not wanting to get right back to tearing the engine down to investigate, I spent the evening researching possible causes, from an over-tensioned timing belt to bent valves. I was, however, very confident that I did not make any of the mistakes that could lead to those failures.

Before going to bed, I decided to take a quick look. I started the engine and listened all over with a mechanic's stethoscope and heard nothing that would indicate an over-tensioned timing belt or bent valves. Instead, I noticed that the whole engine was buzzing.

Then I saw it! During my work I had used a small piece of wood to prop up a wrench that was holding the camshaft sprocket in place. I normally check all my tools when I am done to be sure I haven't left anything under the hood, but I had forgotten about the piece of wood. It had fallen down and gotten wedged between the engine and the car body. I removed the piece of wood and all was back to normal.

Have a Question?

RockAuto

Have a question about a challenging car repair? Rick Muscoplat is a former ASE Master Technician who was also certified in Advanced Engine Diagnostics (L-1). Currently he writes the automotive section for “The Family Handyman” magazine. Rick has kindly offered to answer some technical questions from RockAuto customers. He cannot answer all questions but will pick a few that are likely to also be of interest to owners of other makes and models. If you have a repair question for Rick then please send it to flamur@rockauto.com. Be sure to include the year, make, model and engine for the vehicle your question is about.

Please note Rick does not work at RockAuto. He cannot answer questions about shipping options in Europe, core returns, etc. Accurate diagnosis of a remote vehicle based on a single question is difficult or impossible. Please view Rick’s answers as simply ideas that might help you better develop your own diagnosis and repair strategy.

Q. (Chris in Mississippi) I have a 2007 Ford F150 with a 4.2 V6 that failed to start while out grocery shopping. The fuel pump did not do the initial prime when the key was turned on, nor would it come on when the engine was cranked over for 10 to 15 seconds. My wife and I tried several times. I checked the fuse and it was good. I didn't have a volt meter with me to check anything so I had a new relay brought to me along with a trailer. I replaced the relay, that didn't fix it. While pulling it up on the trailer with a come along I had to rest and my wife insisted on trying to start it again, I told her go ahead you will just run the battery down, well she tried it and it cranked right up! I drove it on up onto the trailer and hauled it home. I've done a lot of my own mechanic and electrical work and I figure the problem is either a bad connection, pinched or damaged wire or not likely but possibly a problem in the ECM...

A. (Rick) I’d check the Electric Fuel Pump Inertia Switch (cuts off fuel if vehicle is involved in an accident) located behind the right front kick panel. The PCM (powertrain control module) can shut down the fuel pump if there’s an internal fault or if there’s a problem with the anti-theft system—but then it shouldn’t crank.

...............

Q. (Barry in Ontario, Canada) I have a 2000 Pontiac Montana (with just under 190,000 Kilometers) that will at times shift extremely hard. (It reminds me of yesterdays in a performance car with a drag racing shift kit). This usually happens when the engine gets hot (like when doing a lot of city driving or when towing a trailer). When this happens there is a distinctive wine from the engine compartment. The weird thing about it is that I can shut the vehicle off for as little as 2 - 3 minutes and it will go away. Also, it rarely happens in the winter. I have looked in my repair manual and found 2 possible solutions; one is the throttle positioning sensor, the other is the transmission vacuum modulator and valve. Before I start throwing parts at it, can you give me your take on the problem?

A. (Rick) Don’t replace anything until you first clean or replace the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor. Then test the Engine Coolant Temperature Sender / Sensor. The computer uses information from both to calculate air/fuel mixtures and transmission line pressure. If the sensors are off, the transmission shifting will be off.

Dave's 1986 Jeep Comanche
Dave's 1986 Jeep Comanche

This is my 1986 Jeep Comanche. It has a Cummins B3 3.3 liter diesel engine. All of the accessories are from the original 2.5L Jeep engine. The AC compressor, expansion valve, drier, all 4 shocks, and steering stabilizer have all been replaced with parts from RockAuto.com.

I travel 50 miles per day and consistently get 34 MPG! I now have over 130,000 daily driven miles on the diesel conversion. I love this truck, and RockAuto has helped me keep it going.

Thanks,
Dave in Georgia
