Repair mistakes & blunders |

This
was a case of making a mountain out
of a molehill.
I rebuilt
an engine on my test stand. Of
course after
it was done I had to break it
in to test for leaks etc.
Over the next hour or so, it ran
great, didn’t overheat, and
had no leaks. It was late, but I
was happy with my results. I cleaned
up my
tools and put them away, got things
organized in the garage, and washed
my hands. But just before I turned
off the lights, I decided to listen
to
the
engine
purr one more time.
It fired up,
ran for about 15 seconds, and
died! After that it would
only crank, but would not fire.
Disappointed, I tore into it, trying
to figure out the problem.
Long story short, I spent the next
two hours trying to diagnose the
problem before I gave up for the
night. As I headed for the light
switch, I accidentally knocked
over the gas can/fuel supply. It
rolled across the floor with a
hollow sound. The "problem" was
an empty gas can.

Is your car ready for winter? |
| More
than 70 percent of motorists
admit that they did not have
their cars winterized in preparation
for inclement weather, according
to a survey conducted by the
Car Care Council. This can prove
dangerous if your car breaks
down due to a lack of preventative
maintenance. Why take the risk?
The good news
is that it’s not too late
to prepare your vehicle for harsh
winter weather. The Car Care Council
recommends the following tasks
be performed by a do-it-yourselfer
or professional automotive technician.
- Check the coolant
(antifreeze) every year; coolant
should be flushed and refilled
at least every two years in most
vehicles.
- Check the battery
and exhaust system.
- Be certain
the heater and defroster are
working properly.
- Keep the gas
tank at least half full, decreasing
the chances of moisture forming
in the gas lines and possibly
freezing.
- Check tire
tread depth and tire pressure;
consider special tires if snow
and ice are a problem in your
area.
- Make sure the
headlights work and are properly
aimed.
- Replace wiper
blades every six months; consider
special snow blades if the weather
dictates.

The
'64 Sport Fury (red car) was a completely
trashed race car when I picked it
up
about
10 years
ago in California. My wife
and I gutted what was left of it, and
did the restoration ourselves
in my shop. Some parts were difficult
to find, but persistence pays off.
The '68 Charger
(blue car) was wrecked in Vegas and
barely running.
Again, my wife
and I rebuilt the complete car
with new interior, brakes, suspension
and body work. When both the Fury
with its 383 and the Charger with
a 440 are
running in my shop, the neighbors
think there's an earthquake happening!!!
My advice to restorers...marry a
car nut like yourselves
and you'll be together for the 26
years and counting!
