Repair Mistakes & Blunders

For many years I would jack up a car with scissor jacks while I would change the oil or just inspect the undercarriage. That all changed one fateful day when I was replacing the brake pads on a Ford Taurus. The jack was holding up the car with the wheel off on one side exposing the brake rotor. I was under the front end of the car inspecting the brake hose, and I got up to get a tool. Suddenly...the scissor jack broke with a loud snap and the entire car came crashing down gouging a chip out of the cement with the brake rotor. Good thing I had previously had a bathroom break. The car would have crushed me if I had been under it. I always use jack stands with the jack as a backup now. Safety first for me.

Right To Repair

When you think of freedom and rights do you ever think about the right to work on your own car? We are lucky in North America that the right to fix your car seems as natural and uncontroversial as the right to cook your own dinner.

What would you do if somebody tried to take away your right to work on your car? Nobody is going to jump out of a black helicopter and weld the hood on your Impala closed. It is more likely that your Right to Repair will gradually be chipped away to nothing.

For decades there have been many Right to Repair battles quietly going on. On one side are usually new car dealers that want their service centers to be the only places with the tools, parts, and legal right to repair your car. Many justifications for this are presented like vehicle safety, intellectual property rights, the cost of equipment, etc. But the bottom line is that successfully using laws and courts to create a repair monopoly would mean more business and profits.

On the other side are auto parts stores, aftermarket part manufacturers, independent repair shops and do-it-yourselfers (DIY). A repair shop cannot be profitable if it has to buy expensive parts from the car dealers that are its competitors and/or it does not have access to parts and diagnostic tools. DIYers and their cars might be completely out of luck if the car dealers do not even bother to stock low volume parts for old cars.

The battle lines sometimes blur. The same manufacturers now often make both OEM and aftermarket parts. RockAuto sells both OEM and aftermarket brands. Dealers often sell aftermarket parts like bed liners, trailer hitches, etc. Pirated brand names and safety are important issues everybody cares about.

However, the Right to Repair battle is ongoing and real. This is an especially interesting time because of all the electronics in new cars. If only the dealers have access to the latest On Board Diagnostics then only they can do many repairs. The DIYer working on an old Chevy may not think it matters to him. It is easy to visit RockAuto.com and buy new carpet, a new alternator, or new tools to repair an old Chevelle. Most car dealers stopped caring or arguing about Chevelle parts long ago. But today’s new cars will be our kids’ old cars. What is your kid going to work on if molded carpet or an alternator with diagnostics capability become intellectual property only available to new car dealers? Think of all the other machines in your life that must be junked because they are unaffordable to fix or parts are unavailable. What a waste if we have to throw away our Chevrolets like we throw away old washing machines.

Over two years ago this car was moved from Hattiesburg, Mississippi just 24 hours before hurricane Katrina hit the area. The car was a complete mess; it had sat in someone's yard for over 20 years. Shortly after we had it shipped over here to the UK and I started the massive restoration job. The complete car was stripped down to the bare frame, all the rust was cut out of it, and new panels went in.

With the help of RockAuto the engine was rebuilt, and the brake system was modified to a dual circuit system from a Dodge Charger. It stops really well now!! The only part of the car I didn't do myself was the interior. This I had done by a local trimming company, but I did put it all back in myself.

2008 will be her 50th birthday and I hope to take her to a few shows. You never know...she might win a trophy or two.
