Just want to let you know how impressed I am with your company.

Not only did I save a ton of money on the parts I just purchased from your company for my '94 Nissan, they were exactly as described in your catalog.

Repair Mistakes & Blunders

Ouch!

I have changed my own oil for 20 years now and have never had an issue. I usually wipe the seal where the oil filter tightens to the engine but after 2 surgeries in the past 4 months, (discs fused in the neck and a major rotator cuff tear in my right shoulder), I replaced the filter without wiping the seal or looking carefully at the old filter because of the lingering pain. I filled the engine with oil and cranked the engine to check for leaks and there were none.

I headed off down the road to dispose of the used oil and about 2 miles down the road, the oil light came on. I immediately stopped the car as smoke came billowing out from under the hood. I jacked up the car when I got home and sure enough the old oil filter o-ring was the culprit. Luckily the engine was not damaged and I was soon back on the road. I usually clean off the seal every time and have never had the old o-ring stick to the engine seal.

Hopefully my story will help someone else who gets in a hurry to change their oil, as this could have been an o-ring disaster.

It's Probably Available New

RockAuto

It takes a lot of luck to find good parts for an older vehicle in a junkyard. If the parts are worn or rusted on your older car then there is a good chance those parts are also shot or long gone from that same older car perched on a stack of old wheel rims.

I remember years ago shipping a tailgate from a scrap yard in Seattle to replace the rusty one on my mom’s 1986 Ford Bronco in Indiana. Less than two years later, the replacement tailgate was sprouting rust holes. The West Coast is a lot less rusty than the Midwest, but the rust seeds planted in every Bronco tailgate at the factory (especially tailgates with the spare tire carrier) were still there just waiting for the right environment to sprout.

Parts manufacturers do a pretty good job building the replacement parts that people actually need. It is a challenge for the manufacturers (ACDelco, Moog, etc.) to figure out what parts to build and for retailers (RockAuto.com) to decide what parts to stock. For example, many thermostat housings last the life of the vehicle. A thermostat housing for a 1977 Ford LTD might sit on the shelf for thirty years. However, many customers would go away disappointed if 2001 Ford Focus thermostat housings were unavailable or out of stock. Thermostat housings on early Focus models often only last a few years.

So keeping track of commonly replaced parts is a big deal. The RockAuto.com catalog actually highlights in bold print the parts that are replaced most often. Sometimes this even helps with diagnosing a problem: “Everybody else is replacing their headlight switch. I bet that switch is the reason my truck’s taillights don’t work!”

Many people incorrectly assume they will have to scrounge through junkyards for parts like grilles, fenders, doors, door handles, etc. If it is a commonly replaced part on a popular model then it is probably available new. My mother sold her Bronco when it got close to the 200000 mile mark and bought herself a Chevy step side pickup. But if I had to replace that tailgate again, I would buy a new tailgate (from RockAuto.com!). It is more work to move the window glass, etc., but for the same money and a little more time the tailgate would be brand new, free of dents and rust.

Steve & Virginia's 1964 Dodge Dart GT
Steve & Virginia's 1964 Dodge Dart GT

Hi,

This is our 1964 Dodge Dart GT that we have owned for a while. It had 63,000 miles on it when we got it. The car was painted Hazelnut Gold Metallic, and a new Legendary Black interior was installed four years ago. The car runs great with the original 273 V8 and push button automatic transmission.

I have recently replaced all the brake wheel cylinders with parts purchased from RockAuto.com. A friend told us to check you out a couple years ago, and we have been customers ever since. I wish I had found out about RockAuto a long time ago.
