Repair Mistakes & Blunders

Ouch!

I was 15 years old, and my older brother had just gotten a '47 Chevy. I kept overhearing the older kids in school talking about pistons, cylinders, shackles for lowering, glasspacks and all that, and wished I knew more about cars. So one evening, I snuck into the garage and lifted the hood of his car. I unscrewed the beautiful chrome-plated acorn nuts that held the valve cover on, and lifted off the cover. I had never heard of gaskets, and this one was cork, and it tore in two or three pieces. I looked at the complicated works underneath and noticed that some of the rocker arms were loose, so I tightened them all. Then I put the cover back on, making sure the torn parts of the cork gasket were lined-up right. Then I started tightening the acorn nuts on the studs that were to hold the cover on. I kept tightening because the nuts never seemed to get tight. Eventually the studs pushed right through the smooth tops of the nuts leaving them with what I would describe as "trap doors".

I didn't say anything to my brother as he left for work next day, but he had plenty to say when he got home! The engine had overheated and oil was seeping out from the valve covers.

I learned from my Dad as he tried to set things right that there was supposed to be clearance for the valves, and that sometimes you have to replace a gasket.

Automotive Trivia

Automotive Trivia

Cars contain a wide variety of bearings to support both radial (perpendicular) and thrust (from the side) loads. Ball bearings contain metal balls and roller bearings use metal cylinders. What do "needle bearings" use to reduce friction while supporting a load?

A. needle bearings use tapered metal cones to handle thrust loads.
B. needle bearings use only a hydrodynamic fluid film to reduce friction between the two surfaces.
C. needle bearings are roller bearings using long, slim metal cylinders whose length is at least four times the diameter.

Wheel Bearings are Truly Amazing

RockAuto

Timken Generation 1 Wheel Bearing

Timken Generation 3 Axle Bearing and Hub Assembly

I enjoy peering inside a complex bearing! It is like admiring the inner workings of a fine watch or gun. Modern, compact automotive wheel bearings are truly amazing. Appreciation of fine craftsmanship helps make the prices of wheel bearings for late model cars more palatable!

Wheel bearings manufactured by Timken for my 1979 Chrysler 300 (Cordoba) start at about $11. Timken wheel bearings for a 2007 Chrysler 300 start at about $68 and run up to $163 for the rears. But the comparison between old and new cars is not really fair. Modern wheel bearings are part of an Axle Bearing and Hub Assembly that includes not just the outer bearing but the seals, inner bearing, lug studs, steel body and other bits that make up a complete hub ready to bolt the car’s wheel onto. Axle Bearing and Hub Assemblies also often include the speed sensor for the anti-lock brakes.

Replacing modern Axle Bearing and Hub Assemblies is often no harder and sometimes even easier than replacing bearings on an old car. That is one reason car manufacturers love them. The technician on the assembly line can bolt an Axle Bearing and Hub Assembly on fast. But since there are so many parts included in a modern Axle Bearing and Hub Assembly and the cost is relatively high, it is worth the time to do a methodical diagnosis before replacing them.

Here is a summary of the steps Timken outlines to check a hub bearing assembly. They do not really differ from the diagnostics recommended for old cars.
1. Verify unfamiliar noise is not just caused by something like the surface of the road or the tire (broken belts, something stuck in the tread, etc).
2. Raise the car. Grasp the tire/wheel at the 3 and 9 o’clock positions and then push and pull to see if there is any play in the bearings. Repeat by grasping the tire/wheel at the 12 and 6 o’clock positions. Turn the tire/wheel and listen and feel for any noise or roughness.
3. Remove the wheel, brake caliper, and rotor. Make sure the movement or noise was not caused by loose lug nuts, scales of rust between the wheel and hub, etc. Repeat the push/pull, listen, and feel tests on just the hub. Roughness, looseness, or noises are signs the bearing is damaged and should be replaced.
4. Timken goes on to describe how it is possible to do the push/pull test with a special measuring tool mounted on the suspension. If movement “exceeds 0.004 inch (0.102 mm), replace the hub bearing assembly.” 0.004 inches is less than a gnat’s whisker. I personally would stop at step 3 and leave the hubs alone if my hands did not detect movement or roughness. Of course I drive a ’79 Chrysler which probably has not one single part still within a 0.004 inch tolerance!

Chris's 1967 Dodge Dart
Chris's 1967 Dodge Dart

My 1967 Dodge Dart is finally finished! A two year restoration, but the good people at RockAuto made finding parts like gaskets, electrical connectors, various engine parts, shocks, and tune up parts for the 225 cubic-inch Slant-6 easy. Mileage is just a little over 50,000, the car is running great, so I am looking forward to many more miles on the road!

Thanks
Chris in Nova Scotia
