Repair Mistakes & Blunders

Back in the early 80's I was "volunteered" by our local church group to use my shade tree mechanical skills to fix cars for those who were down on their luck and needed their vehicles to get to work or find a job. My very first challenge was to get a coughing six cylinder sedan back up to par. After a complete tune up, change of fluids and filters, it was humming along nicely.

I was applying some finishing adjustments to the carburetor (remember them) to smooth the idle. Then all of a sudden I noticed my channel lock pliers slipping off the top of the un-shrouded radiator towards the fan. I forgot I had left them there and there was no way I could reach them (I was standing next to the driver's side front fender) before they collided with the spinning fan. I ducked, not knowing which direction they were going to fly, and heard a loud metallic "WHAM"! I knew things were bad when I saw the pliers on the ground in front of the car, but I felt sick when I saw all the green fluid gushing out of the radiator. The fan propelled the pliers through the radiator, leaving a baseball size hole in it, and then through the plastic grill. The metal fan, unbelievably, had no damage.

Each job I did for the church was tightly budgeted, and there was no way this radiator could be fixed, so I paid for another radiator out of my own pocket. When I explained what happened, the Church forgave my ineptitude and reimbursed me. To this day I never leave a tool on top of the radiator, battery, or air cleaner.

Fifty Years of Tinkering

This is my 1964 Ford Galaxie 500 XL Convertible that was imported from Los Angeles in the early 1990's. I like RockAuto and have purchased many parts chiefly because of the way parts are thoroughly and easily catalogued by your website. Delivery is very fast and usually takes less than a week to arrive here in Finland. RockAuto prices are great and you can always count on getting the correct parts.
