Another Happy Customer!

...RockAuto saved me a fortune on an expensive part, delivered it fast, and made me feel as if I was your only customer.

I very rarely write this type of e-mail to any company I do business with, but I'm proud to say that I'm a RockAuto customer forever.

Repair Mistakes & Blunders

Ouch!

Back in the early 80's I was "volunteered" by our local church group to use my shade tree mechanical skills to fix cars for those who were down on their luck and needed their vehicles to get to work or find a job. My very first challenge was to get a coughing six cylinder sedan back up to par. After a complete tune up, change of fluids and filters, it was humming along nicely.

I was applying some finishing adjustments to the carburetor (remember them) to smooth the idle. Then all of a sudden I noticed my channel lock pliers slipping off the top of the un-shrouded radiator towards the fan. I forgot I had left them there and there was no way I could reach them (I was standing next to the driver's side front fender) before they collided with the spinning fan. I ducked, not knowing which direction they were going to fly, and heard a loud metallic "WHAM"! I knew things were bad when I saw the pliers on the ground in front of the car, but I felt sick when I saw all the green fluid gushing out of the radiator. The fan propelled the pliers through the radiator, leaving a baseball size hole in it, and then through the plastic grill. The metal fan, unbelievably, had no damage.

Each job I did for the church was tightly budgeted, and there was no way this radiator could be fixed, so I paid for another radiator out of my own pocket. When I explained what happened, the Church forgave my ineptitude and reimbursed me. To this day I never leave a tool on top of the radiator, battery, or air cleaner.

Fifty Years of Tinkering

RockAuto

There are many reasons to do it yourself (DIY) and many different types of do-it-yourselfers. Some DIY because they enjoy it. Some DIY to save money. I personally have always felt a bond with the roughly 60000 Cuban DIYers maintaining pre-1960 American cars.

The Cubans and I hate throwing anything useful away. Sure the trade embargo and other big issues may have originally forced the Cubans to be automotive DIYers. Some of them might be ecstatic if they got the chance to swap their 1950’s Cadillac, Chevy, Chrysler, or Ford for a 2009 Malibu or Camry. But after fifty years of tinkering, I bet many Cubans are very proud of their work and would not think of turning over the key (or whatever tool is now used to start their car).

Comparing myself to a Cuban DIYer is like comparing a Cub Scout’s pinewood derby car to a Corvette Z06. RockAuto stocks a new ignition switch and wiring for my wife’s old Mazda 323, but I put in a momentary-on toggle switch (“Extras” section of the catalog) instead. A Cuban would have used the toggle switch because they had to, but I just did not want to spend the time taking apart the Mazda’s steering column.

The Cubans do things like fabricate their own auto parts. Need new brake shoes for a ’53 Chevrolet? We can just order brakes from RockAuto, but the Cuban DIYer will make new brake shoes out of who knows what. A Cuban DIYer might retrofit a 1951 Pontiac with a carburetor pulled from a Czech tractor and steering gear from an old Russian truck.

The closest I get to a true Cuban machine is the family heirloom lawnmower. About six years ago I installed a 1995 Tecumseh motor with 3.5 horsepower onto the magnesium body of my parents’ 1961 Lawn Boy. A modern engine and the sweet Lawn Boy mag body with its original wheels and white wall tires! Ok, how about my wife’s family heirloom vacuum cleaner with a wooden handle salvaged from a broken shovel and an on/off switch mounted in an old starter relay box?

It sure would be fun to take a look at the Cuban DIYer American cars. If the politicians stepped aside and let the DIYers talk then relations between the US and Cuba might have thawed a long time ago. Instead of missile crises, let us work together to solve healthier problems like a broken leaf spring shackle on a 1955 Dodge!

1964 Ford Galaxie XL 500
1964 Ford Galaxie XL 500

This is my 1964 Ford Galaxie 500 XL Convertible that was imported from Los Angeles in the early 1990's. I like RockAuto and have purchased many parts chiefly because of the way parts are thoroughly and easily catalogued by your website. Delivery is very fast and usually takes less than a week to arrive here in Finland. RockAuto prices are great and you can always count on getting the correct parts.

So far I have bought from RockAuto:
Starter, Flexplate, Distributor, Gaskets, Spark Plugs, Sparkplug Wires, Fuel Tank Cap, Fuel Pump, Power Steering Hoses, Headlight Switch, Headlight Dimmer Connectors, Headlamp Sockets, Coolant Hoses, Thermostat, Speedometer Cable, Instrument Cluster Voltage Regulator.

Here in Finland most people obviously drive European and Japanese cars, but there is a growing American car culture who find most of the Opels and Toyotas driven here small and boring! American cars are bigger, more stylish, and much more comfortable! I also have a 1999 Cadillac STS (my daily driver), and a 1994 Camaro Z/28 Convertible.

Thanks!
Mika
