The primary focus of OpelGT.com when it launched back in 1998 was to share photos and information about the classic Opel GT sports car, as well as to serve as the website for a regional Opel Club. Another Reason to Smile when the Doorbell Rings...

Who are the local men and women that conveniently bring RockAuto parts from the warehouse directly to your home or business? And even more important for automotive enthusiasts, what are they driving?

FedEx Ground has more than 73,000 employees and contractors working in communities throughout the US, Canada, and Puerto Rico (about.fedex). The FedEx Ground driver is the owner or employee of a local business. Their income depends on how their business is structured and which community they deliver to. Pay is reported anywhere from $12 an hour (browncafe.com) to over $100000 per year (businessweek.com).

Drivers follow FedEx specifications on the appearance of their trucks. Since local contractors lease or own their trucks, they get to choose the best vehicles for their particular markets. Some drive Ford E series, GMC Savana, or Mercedes diesel powered Sprinter cargo vans. FedEx drivers in smaller towns might only need a Dodge Caravan or other relatively small but efficient vehicle. The commonly seen FedEx step van is likely a Freightliner chassis with a Cummins diesel under the hood. FedEx also now runs hybrid electric powered step vans in a few areas.

UPS has over 112,000 drivers living and/or working in nearly every neighborhood. They earn an average $28 per hour (pressroom.ups). The timeless and ubiquitous brown UPS step van has used chassis, bodies, and engines by Ford, Grumman (Morgan Olson), Cummins, Freightliner, and others over the years. Almost all of them had manual transmissions and many had a custom camshaft or other modifications specified by UPS to improve efficiency.

UPS has always looked for ways to reduce the cost of operating their trucks. In 1930, UPS bought all electric trucks built by a company called Walker. These days translucent roofs reduce weight and the need for electric lighting. Compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) fueled trucks improve emissions. In a few areas, UPS now delivers in hydraulic hybrid diesel trucks from International Truck & Engine (Navistar). The hydraulic hybrid captures the energy from the UPS truck’s frequent stops.

Carefully planning routes to maximize the number of deliveries while minimizing the number of fuel wasting left turns and other traffic delays is another way the local FedEx and UPS drivers are able to get RockAuto auto parts to your door in the most environmentally friendly manner. Another reason to smile when the doorbell rings and you bring a box in off your front stoop!
