Another Happy Customer!

I ordered from RockAuto for the first time this month. I found the online catalog easy to use with many choices. Ordering was easy and the parts came faster than I ever expected...

Thanks for a great source of high quality, inexpensive parts.

Forum of the Month

OpelGT.com

The primary focus of OpelGT.com when it launched back in 1998 was to share photos and information about the classic Opel GT sports car, as well as to serve as the website for a regional Opel Club. In 2002 it became a forum based website where questions were readily answered by other members. Participation exploded and its scope quickly expanded to other Opel models.

The community at OpelGT.com has evolved into a leading resource for information on all Opel models from the 1950's to the 1980's. With over 14,500 registered members who have contributed 180,000 posts (and over 14,000 photos), almost any question about these cars is already in our database. If the site's search engine can't find the answer, a post will probably be replied to within minutes.

OpelGT.com has a true "Community" spirit where members freely share information. It has also become the center for regional Opel clubs to post info about local meets or events.

If you are the administrator or member of a forum and you would like to see your website featured in an upcoming newsletter and receive a discount code to share with your members, contact jessa@rockauto.com.

Repair Mistakes & Blunders

Ouch!

In the 1950's, (OK, so I’m old!), I worked at a gas station in Denver, Colorado. Back then gas stations were repair oriented, unlike the mini-marts of today. The station I worked at had four repair bays and two islands of gas pumps out front. When it got too busy for the “gas pump jockeys” to handle all customers, it was common for the repair guys to be interrupted during a repair to go up front and help.

One busy day I was summoned out to the islands to wait on someone who had just driven in with a brand new 1958 Chevy Impala V8. It was the first year of that particular body style, and there were a number of other customers and gas station staff standing around “oohing” and “aahing” at the car while I was performing the regular "fill'er up" duties.

I checked the oil and it needed a quart added as it was near the add mark. I pulled off the oil cap and placed it on the top of the air cleaner, and then went inside to get the oil. Now that the hood was up, even more folks were inspecting the engine. As I was pouring the oil in, I was thinking about the new dual points and plugs I was installing on a Chrysler Windsor in the “back room”. After I topped off the oil, I saw an opportunity to close the hood…so I did...

And there sat a beautiful 1958 Chevy Impala V8...with a nice, round bump about the size of an oil filler cap near the center of the hood! It was one of the most sickening moments of my young life. The customer went ballistic, as did my boss. But insurance repaired the hood and I kept my job. Since that day I have NEVER again placed any item on top of an air cleaner.

PS: That customer never came back. Even after repair, the customer knew his hood was “patched”.

Include your mailing address and shirt size (large or extra large) and we will mail you a RockAuto "Do it yourself?" t-shirt if we publish your story (see the t-shirts under Extras in the catalog). Another Reason to Smile when the Doorbell Rings...

RockAuto

Who are the local men and women that conveniently bring RockAuto parts from the warehouse directly to your home or business? And even more important for automotive enthusiasts, what are they driving?

FedEx Ground has more than 73,000 employees and contractors working in communities throughout the US, Canada, and Puerto Rico (about.fedex). The FedEx Ground driver is the owner or employee of a local business. Their income depends on how their business is structured and which community they deliver to. Pay is reported anywhere from $12 an hour (browncafe.com) to over $100000 per year (businessweek.com).

Drivers follow FedEx specifications on the appearance of their trucks. Since local contractors lease or own their trucks, they get to choose the best vehicles for their particular markets. Some drive Ford E series, GMC Savana, or Mercedes diesel powered Sprinter cargo vans. FedEx drivers in smaller towns might only need a Dodge Caravan or other relatively small but efficient vehicle. The commonly seen FedEx step van is likely a Freightliner chassis with a Cummins diesel under the hood. FedEx also now runs hybrid electric powered step vans in a few areas.

UPS has over 112,000 drivers living and/or working in nearly every neighborhood. They earn an average $28 per hour (pressroom.ups). The timeless and ubiquitous brown UPS step van has used chassis, bodies, and engines by Ford, Grumman (Morgan Olson), Cummins, Freightliner, and others over the years. Almost all of them had manual transmissions and many had a custom camshaft or other modifications specified by UPS to improve efficiency.

UPS has always looked for ways to reduce the cost of operating their trucks. In 1930, UPS bought all electric trucks built by a company called Walker. These days translucent roofs reduce weight and the need for electric lighting. Compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) fueled trucks improve emissions. In a few areas, UPS now delivers in hydraulic hybrid diesel trucks from International Truck & Engine (Navistar). The hydraulic hybrid captures the energy from the UPS truck’s frequent stops.

Carefully planning routes to maximize the number of deliveries while minimizing the number of fuel wasting left turns and other traffic delays is another way the local FedEx and UPS drivers are able to get RockAuto auto parts to your door in the most environmentally friendly manner. Another reason to smile when the doorbell rings and you bring a box in off your front stoop!

I try to keep “Gertrude” as original as possible. RockAuto's selection of Bosch Ignition parts (Distributor Cap, Rotor, Points, etc.) has been a big help! I have been very pleased with the value and quick delivery.

Thanks,
