Turbocharger hose failure is a common concern for many diesel vehicle owners, primarily because the original equipment hoses cannot withstand the extreme operating conditions, temperatures and exposure to oil that these hoses are subjected to. Many of these hoses were only available from the dealer as part of expensive assemblies. Gates' engineers identified several shortcomings pertaining to the hoses and clamps, and designed and engineered a full line of these high quality Turbocharger hose and clamp sets.

  • Specially formulated fluoroelastomer hose liners to prevent oil permeation and act as a barrier to harmful exhaust gases.

Repair Mistakes & Blunders

Ouch!

Back in 1966, I had a 1962 Austin-Healey Sprite (the "Bug-eye" model). A problem developed wherein at a specific rpm, the engine would sputter and shut off. Once the engine died, it would turn over with the starter normally but would not start until it had sat for approximately six minutes.

I spent hours troubleshooting (and drove many miles below 3200 rpm) trying to isolate that problem.

Serendipity occurred one day when I revved the engine to 3200 rpm while I was looking under the hood. At 3200 rpm (not below), a pinhole, high-pressure leak in the upper radiator hose sprayed coolant right into the dual, side-draft carburetors. Apparently it took six minutes for the water drawn into the cylinders to vaporize and allow the plugs to spark enough to restart the engine.

What is one of the main reasons the V8s in old American muscle cars safely rev to only about 5000 RPM while old Ferrari V8s rev to 7000 RPM and beyond?

A. The Ferrari V8s were really the equivalent of two four cylinder engines mounted side by side, with two output shafts feeding torque into a transmission/differential assembly.

B. The Ferrari uses fuel injection and a turbo charger to deliver more gasoline and air. Ferrari's turbo design also helped force exhaust out the exhaust manifolds.

C. The Ferrari uses a flat-plane crankshaft which does not have the heavy counterweights found on American cross-plane crankshafts. Heavy counterweights make American V8s well balanced and smooth running, but lower revving.

The Most Ordinary EPS System

The hydraulic power steering pump in my 1992 Dodge B250 van was also used in 1980 to 2005 Chevy vehicles and 1980 to 2002 Fords. It is the power steering pump found in the AMC Eagle, Peugeot 505 and Volvo 780 as well. When the power steering pump in my old van eventually goes bad, I know RockAuto will have numerous affordable pumps for me to choose from.

Electric power steering (EPS) is gradually replacing hydraulic power steering systems on new vehicles. EPS improves fuel economy because it only runs when needed. It can keep working even when the engine is off. EPS also can be located separately from the engine. That is important for hybrid vehicles that may have the gasoline engine mounted in an unconventional location.

EPS is in the car-enthusiast news these days because it is being installed on high sales volume vehicles (Chevy Cruze, Chrysler 300, Ford F-150, Toyota Corolla…). I wonder how those EPS systems will be holding up when the cars become used car bargains in ten or twenty years.

It turns out that variations of EPS have been around for some time. The Toyota MR2 built in the early 1990s has the engine in the back and uses a hydraulic power steering system pressurized by an electric motor. Electric power steering pumps for the Toyota MR2 are currently less than $150 at RockAuto, so nothing too alarming there.

Some newer EPS systems are also still hydraulic at their core. The mid 2000s era Chevy Malibu, Pontiac G6 and Saturn Aura have an “electric power steering assist module” driving a hydraulic power steering pump. These electric motors currently are around $400 (at RockAuto).

There are two common modern EPS systems. Small vehicles might use an electric motor integrated into the steering column. Larger vehicles typically have an electric motor built into the steering rack and pinion assembly. Replacement EPS parts are typically first available for the oldest systems and/or the systems that rack up the most miles on fleet vehicles.

The early 2000s Honda S2000 has an electronic rack and pinion unit that currently is around $300 (at RockAuto). That is very reasonable considering the assembly is both a complete steering rack and the electrical parts. A new Motorcraft rack and pinion assembly with EPS motor for a late-model Ford F-150 is currently around $750 (at RockAuto). Larger vehicles typically need larger, more expensive electric motors.

Some tried and true used car shopping tips apply. In these early days of mainstream EPS, it may be hard to guess which system will end up being as common as the power steering pump on my old Dodge van, but it is a good idea to try to avoid unique or one-model-year EPS systems. The systems installed on the most vehicles will be the least expensive to fix twenty years from now. A lot of classic 1960s Lincoln Continental owners have wished their cars came with ordinary belt-driven Ford power steering pumps rather than unique crankshaft-driven, Lincoln-only pumps. Awesome, unique styling is good, but try to pick the most ordinary EPS system!

Bill's 1959 Dodge Pickup

This is my 1959 Dodge pickup. When I purchased it three years ago, it was equipped with a slide-in camper, and used only for fishing and camping. But, it only had about 49,000 miles on the odometer.

It is a frame off restoration painted the original Arctic blue, with minor modifications staying true to the truck's era. Things such as a cast iron 4-bbl intake for the 318 polyspherical-head engine and two inch bands added to the original five inch wheel rims allowing use of 1959 Plymouth hub caps and beauty rings. We have driven it to several shows and won awards in every one we entered!

RockAuto has been a very good source of parts for restoring this truck (and the 1965 Dodge Dart I'm currently working on). I do want to thank you for having the hard to find parts for this truck, and share the finished results with you.
