Another Happy Customer!

I have made more than a dozen orders from RockAuto so far. The latest one includes two gasket sets and an air filter delivered for less than the cost of one of the gasket sets at my local auto parts store.

I am constantly telling people that any repair that is planed will cost much less when you go to RockAuto! Hard to find and discontinued parts can also be found at a reasonable price.

Repair Mistakes & Blunders

Ouch!

My daughter decided that the oil in her Chevrolet ZR2 Tracker needed to be changed. I had never taken the time to show her how to change oil (my bad), but her boyfriend offered to show her how it is done. I was out running errands, and then returned home where they explained that they had installed the correct oil filter and had used my oil drain pan to drain the old oil into.

I looked at what they had done and inquired what oil they had used. They told me that they had used two quarts of the oil I had in a cabinet. I responded, "Just two quarts?!" They went on to explain to me that they did their research and discovered the Tracker had a 2.0 liter engine. And, since a quart is just a little less than a liter, they just used two quarts. Fortunately, they had not driven the car anywhere.

We spent the next few minutes adding three more quarts of oil, and I showed them how to check the oil level using the dipstick. Afterwards, we talked about engine displacement, and how that size does not directly determine oil capacity.

Remember when Hertz rented Fords and Avis rented GM vehicles? The rental car companies are no longer tied to one car manufacturer, but they are tied to each other. These eight rental car brands are owned by just three companies. Which of these brands are part of the same company?

Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National, Thrifty

Answer below

Drilled, Slotted and Grooved

RockAuto

This summer, my brother-in-law bought a Power Stop Rotor & Brake Pad Kit for his family's Lincoln Navigator. The Lincoln's OE rotors and pads had less than 30,000 miles (48,280 km) on them, but their vibration and fading in routine traffic made my brother-in-law concerned about their ability to handle an emergency stop. He had a local shop install the Rotor & Brake Pad Kit and was impressed by how the new brakes performed during a family road trip to Florida.

I first spied the Lincoln's new brakes in a restaurant parking lot after a family get-together. My gushing about how cool the drilled and slotted rotors looked led to a few "boys will be boys" eye rolls from my sister and my spouse. I did not have much luck moving to a practical discussion about improved stopping distances and safety. My wife probably stopped believing my "practical discussions" about cars decades ago. (Our "new" 1986 Mustang GT really does get much better gas mileage than our 1979 Chrysler 300...)

Drilled and slotted rotors did make the Navigator look slightly more like a Corvette, but improved safety really was my brother-in-law's number one concern. The Navigator's 6,000 LB weight (2,722 kg) means its brakes might work almost as hard on a family vacation as a Corvette's do on a racetrack.

Power Stop data shows the holes in the rotors can lower temperatures by 180 degrees F (82 degrees C). Lower temperatures can mean less wear on the brake pads, less build up of friction material deposits and shorter stopping distances. Slots help keep dust and gases from accumulating on the rotor surface, giving the brake pads more bite. Both holes and slots can help get water off the rotor surface.

The holes in Power Stop rotors and Centric rotors are designed to work with the cooling fins inside the rotor. There are usually different rotor designs for each side of the vehicle. The correct steel, surface finishes, chamfers, hole/slot quantities and other specifications are chosen to reduce noise, maximize rotor strength and satisfy other design goals. The unique "S-Groove" slots in Raybestos R-300 rotors increase pad "bite" while also lengthening pad life. The electrophoretic coating on Dura International rotors offers excellent corrosion resistance. RockAuto's manufacturers put a lot of effort into developing cohesive designs for their drilled, slotted and/or smooth rotors!

When there are lots of choices, brake parts are listed in the RockAuto catalog under headings (Daily Driver, Heavy Duty, Performance, etc.) to help you pick the parts/kits that fit your driving conditions. RockAuto's complete Rotor & Brake Pad Kits maximize design performance and ease installation by using rotors and pads made for each other and include the shims, lubricant, etc. that specific vehicles might require. The technician who installed the Power Stop Rotor & Brake Pad Kit on the Lincoln was almost as happy as my brother-in-law!

Tim's 2001 Corvette Z06

I bought this 2001 Corvette Z06 a couple of years ago. The previous owner had passed away, and his wife was looking to find it a good home. I have always wanted a "Vette" and this was my chance to own a nice one as I stepped into retirement. It’s not an old collector car, but a 15-year-old car that deserves to be kept in top condition for show and go! RockAuto has been my source for belts, tensioners, idler pulleys and more to keep the under-hood squeaks and squeals away. RockAuto also has the OEM and upgraded suspension part choices to keep my Z06 hugging the road.

After purchase of this car, a friend of mine suggested I check out RockAuto and wow, I am glad I did! RockAuto parts are often half to even two thirds off the local dealership price. And, since the dealerships and local parts stores seldom have parts for a Corvette of this vintage in stock, I get the parts just as quickly with RockAuto's fast service.

Thank you for helping to keep my retirement hobby affordable!
