Intake manifold gaskets today must seal and survive in much more demanding operating environments than in the past, including exposure to extended life anti-freeze, known as OAT (Organic Acid Technology) coolants. Purchasing a gasket with a steel core and space-age rubber polymers can be a very good investment. Although the rubber-on-plastic intake gaskets work great in the majority of situations, the severe operating environments on some vehicles in the aftermarket created demand for an even tougher option.
