  • Full disassembly and inspection
  • Electrically and electronically tested for input and output parameters
  • New rack belt (where applicable)
  • New boots and seals

Common EPAS Failures
Water Ingression- This occurs when the unit is not properly sealed and water is able to get inside the unit causing contamination, electrical problems and rust.
Belt Failure- Belt driven EPAS racks have an internal belt to transfer the torque from the electric motor to the rack bar via a ball screw assembly. The belt can wear, stretch, strip, or break causing loss of assist.
Torque Sensor Failure- The sensor gives incorrect input data to the Power Steering Control Module (PSCM) leading to improper assist and diagnostic trouble codes (DTC).
Reduced Assist- When values or inputs are not within specification the PSCM can use preprogrammed values to give reduced assist to the driver. A DTS will be set triggering the Mafunction Indicator Light (MIL).

EPAS Programming

Some EPAS units do not require programming. For those that do, these steps should be followed:

1. Vehicle system voltage must remain constant (OE specified) during the reprogram
2. Vehicle electrical system should be functioning properly
  • Battery health and state of charge
  • Connections are clean and cables are in good condition (voltage drop)
  • Alternator charge peformance (this may require a power supply or reflashing charger, do not use a battery charger)
3. Follow all OE re-programming instructions exactly
